RAMSAR CULTURE NETWORK DEVELOPMENT IN THE CARPATHIAN REGION PROJECT

The Carpathian Wetland Initiative implemented the project Ramsar Culture Network Development in the Carpathian Region submitted by the Ramsar Convention and financed from the MAVA Foundation. Project was implemented in 3 months (November 2017-January 2018). Its aim was to identify wetland sites important from cultural point of view (archaeological sites, historical sites, legends, songs, poems related to wetlands – rivers, springs, peatlands, wet forests, mystic places, traditionally used sites, landscapes, not necessarily at Ramsar sites) in the region. It gathered primary information on this topic from the area of Slovakia, Ukraine, partly Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Serbia.

We would like to present you a sample of material and non-material cultural elements identified during a rapid inventory in Carpathian countries.

Interest in this topic continues to grow, and there is still much to explore. Therefore, we provide a Questionnaire to support further data collection. You can use it whenever you identify a new example or aspect of wetland cultural heritage in the Carpathians. We kindly welcome your contributions, as they will help us expand and strengthen this study even more.

Network of Carpathian Protected Areas and Ramsar Sites

Efforts to jointly protect wetlands in the Carpathians began in September 2003. At that time, Slovakia and Norway launched a project called “Network of Carpathian Protected Areas and Ramsar Sites.” The main goal was to connect Carpathian protected areas and Ramsar Sites and thus strengthen cooperation across the region. In addition, the project focused on adding more Carpathian wetlands to the official Ramsar List and as a result improving their representation in the international database.
